Systematic Theology (III) Lectures on two major topics of discussion: Ecclesiology and Doctrine of the Holy Spirit by Dr. Samuel Chiow. The ten lectures on Ecclesiology, contained in two DVDs, last approximately five hours. The twenty lessons on Doctrine of the Holy Spirit, on 3 DVDs, last about eight and a half hours.
Ecclesiology: In these lectures, Professor Chiow discusses the definition of the church, church management, church sacraments, the authority of the church, worship in the church, etc. The lessons also give a brief introduction of the various church denominations. Who is the church? What is the church? Some feel that the church is the building; and others believe that only their “local church” is the “true” church, or such and such a person’s church is the “true” church. How should the church be governed? What are the roles and responsibilities of specific positions in the church? How should church leaders be chosen? What are the essential “sacraments” in the church? How did these “sacraments” come about? What are the boundaries for these “sacraments”? Can the church “punish” believers within the church? Where does authority come from? What is worship? How should Christians worship? These are all questions of concern for Christians. Furthermore, many believers have questions about the various church denominations. These are the focal points of the sessions and Professor Chiow uses about five hours to answer all these questions in a succinct yet holistic fashion.
The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit: In many churches, the Holy Spirit is a subject that many people do not want to discuss, but Christians must know and learn about the Holy Spirit. What is the work of the Holy Spirit? What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Christians should have a deeper understanding of two sensitive areas concerning the Holy Spirit: the Baptism of the Spirit and the filling of the Holy Spirit. In addition, do the prophets of the Old Testament still exist today? How should Christians of the New Testament time look at “prophecy”? How does the Holy Spirit work in terms of healing in this day and age? These are all subject matters that Christians should understand. Besides talking about the fundamental issues listed above, Professor Chiow also provides a brief history of the movement of the Holy Spirit.
